My first newborn socially distanced photoshoot

2020 has been a crazy year with the fear of coronavirus and everyone being in lockdown. I really felt for all the new mummies going through their pregnancy journey and births during these scary times. It should be a time of excitement, hanging out with friends & family, lots of baby shopping, joining an NCT class and having a baby shower. But instead we went into lockdown and saw no one. These new parents also had the worry about appointments, didn’t get to meet their midwifes, home births were written off, partners may not be around in for the birth and the fear of what would it actually be like at hospital. Then if your baby arrived during lockdown you couldn’t have any visitors, even grandparents were not aloud to have cuddles. I really do have so much respect for all the strong muma’s who have been through this.

Gorgeous Theo was born during lockdown and we did this shoot just after lockdown had eased. I went to their house, we we shot this in the bedroom by a window with lots of natural light and it was perfect. It was very easy to social distance and I wore a mask and didn’t touch Theo. It was a completely natural unposed newborn shoot and the photos are simply beautiful.

For me, newborn portraits should be simple. There is nothing more timeless than classic natural light newborn photography. I think these images are really stylish and contemporary.

New baby sessions are usually held in your home, which make for lovely, relaxed, intimate family portraits. I use gentle window light and we can include other family members, siblings, parents and even pets. I love the ones with his big sister Florence.

There is no 'posing' and the focus is entirely on interacting naturally with baby. As with all of my photography my goal is to capture genuine, beautiful emotion.

As a mum myself I can honestly say these first few weeks are also a bit of a blur. This is why newborn photographs are magical. They take you straight back to that sense of wonder at your tiny baby, the overwhelming love and incredible euphoria of bringing a new person into the world.

Newborn shoots are best done In the first two weeks of your little ones arrival. We want to capture the tiny, curly, sleepy newness of your beautiful baby. Its amazing how quickly they change and you will look back at these memories and be so pleased that you had them documented.

My shoots are relaxed and very baby led. If you already have a child I certainly want to include them in the shoot too.

For a newborn shoot it very important to have the house very warm, as your little baby won’t be wearing a lot, so we want to make sure they are nice and cosy. I do also use a heat pad under my throws which they love.

If you would like to book I recommend getting in touch after your 20 week scan and can book a provisional date. I would need a £50 deposit. Then message me once baby arrives and we can either confirm or adjust the date.
